The New Skoda karoq

The New Skoda karoq

The New Skoda karoq is a completely new car, which parks in the spot vacated by the weird and wonderful Yeti. So it’s a midsize crossover which shares its building blocks with the Seat Ateca and, along with the Seat, it’ll compete with the Nissan Qashqai and a million cars like it.

It’s slightly longer, wider and roomier than the Yeti, and ixnherits a new family face from the bigger Kodiaq (Skoda’s naming strategy involves an Alaskan island and a linguistic workout, so we’ll ignore it).

Will we miss the Yeti? Of course, with its love-it-or-hate-it looks and sheer usefulness, it’s always been a TG favourite, but let’s not get too nostalgic. Over the years it grew from a four-eyed oddity with a back-to-basics appeal into something much more mainstream. It even started to look sensible.

If you do want a diesel, you can choose from a 228bhp 2.0-litre or a lower-powered 148bhp version. The latter claims 0-62mph in 8.9 seconds, and has the lowest CO2 emissions in The New Skoda karoq range, at 115g/km. For that reason it’s likely to be a good choice for company buyers – ahead of the slower 113bhp 1.6 TDI, which emits 118g/km.

The New Skoda Kodiaq

There’s also the option of a The New Skoda karoq DSG auto and 4WD, although our car was a front-drive manual. Still, it did have selectable driving modes, with Normal, Sport and Eco settings. These change the profile of the engine and throttle; 4×4 models add an off-road mode.

The New Skoda karoq is well equipped. Entry-level SE cars feature DAB, Bluetooth, dual-zone climate control, 17-inch alloys and LED daytime running lights. Move up to SE L and you get the excellent VarioFlex movable rear seats, heated front seats, an eight-inch touchscreen display and a rear-view camera.
