The New Mercedes E Class coupe
A car’s looks are a subjective matter, but few would argue Mercedes’ saloons aren’t sleek and interesting to behold. Its coupé versions are often even better, and we’d wager The New Mercedes E Class coupe is one of its best designs yet.
But the term coupé is used loosely among carmakers these days, with more and more four-door models creeping onto the market. The New Mercedes E Class coupe , though, is strictly that, with two doors the only option, and seating for four – at a push.
Three engine options are initially available in the UK: a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel 220 d, a turbocharged 2.0 four-cylinder petrol 300 and turbocharged 3.0 V6 petrol 400 4MATIC, the latter getting all-wheel drive as standard. A nine-speed automatic gearbox is also standard across the range, while just the one trim level is on offer – AMG Line. A six-cylinder diesel and performance AMG versions will follow later.
It’s available only in AMG Line trim, which, perhaps obviously, calls on the glamour of the AMG name but doesn’t come with a snarling V8.
What it does come with is a list price of £50,820, which has been raised to £58,820 on our test car, but in its pre-options list price form looks keenly matched against its Audi A7 Sportback and BMW 6 Series rivals.
The product of an almost 50-year history that stretches back to 1968 and the wonderfully named ‘Stroke Eight Coupe’, it’s Mercedes doing what it does best – luxury, space, technology and style. Sure, there’s a selfish element to choosing a coupe, but Merc has tried to ease that descision by making this new car 123mm longer and 74mm wider, with a 68mm wider track front and rear than its predecessor. That means 74mm more legroom in the back and better purchase on the road. Just make sure your parallel parking is up to scratch.
