The New Skoda Kodiaq
The New Skoda Kodiaq.A seven-seat crossover that’ll bring another load of buyers into the Czech firm’s dealers. You can have it with 4×4 and there’s decent ground clearance, 2.5-tonne towing capacity and an off-road mode. But it looks more like an estate car. It’ll do pretty much the same family duty as a Nissan X-Trail or Kia Sorento.

A Land Rover Discovery Sport is in the frame and is the most desirable, if expensive rival, and has more off-road chops. It looks big, but that’s a deception. A lowish roof stretches it visually. It’s actually only 4cm longer than an Octavia estate. So it isn’t intimidatingly bulky for urban school-run work or multi-storey car parks.
The cheapest versions of The New Skoda Kodiaq come with five seats as standard, but it’s the seven-seat versions that have by far the biggest appeal. Engine options range from a 121bhp 1.4 petrol all the way up to a punchy 188bhp 2.0-litre diesel, and there’s also a choice between front and four-wheel drive and manual and automatic (DSG) gearboxes.
If you want to trade outright practicality for style, a zesty drive and a premium brand, you can do it (BMW X1, Audi Q2, Range Rover Evoque).

If you need the opposite – a big SUV with lots of space and maximum towing ability, from a value brand – you can also have it (Kia Sorento, Ssangyong Rexton).
If you want what we might call a ‘normal’ modern, volume-brand compact SUV (Volkswagen Tiguan, Mazda CX-5, Honda CR-V, Ford Kuga), a more traditional 4×4 done small (Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester) or even an oversized crossover (Ford Edge), you can have it.
